Most of the history of the horse lineage took place in North America. Only when North and South America were connected by the Isthmus of Panama, about 3 million years ago, could horses colonise South America. This North American species, the Western Horse, resembled modern zebras in tooth structure, but we don’t know whether it had stripes.
