Birds
Hundreds of bird species are represented in the image collection. Images are of wild birds, gallery mounts, study skins, and mounted skeletons. The collection also includes bird nests and eggs.
Dinosaurs
All aspects of a dinosaur from skeletons to eggs to skin imprints. Specimens from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods have primarily been collected from North America. Highlights include a renowned collection of skeletal mounts and high quality casts.
Fishes
Fish are found in waters world-wide and at all depths. Objects include mounts, cleared and stained specimens and wet specimens.
Fossils
The fossils of all animals, plants and other living organisms. Features a variety of specimens.
Fungi
Yeasts, moulds, and mushrooms. Images feature dried specimens and include some microscopic views.
Gems & Jewellery
The largest collection of gems and jewellery in Canada. Highlights include the exquisite Star of Lanka—a beautiful blue sapphire boasting a six-rayed star; the world’s largest cerussite gem; and stunning specimens of gold.
Insects & their Relatives
Animals with a hard outer covering, or exoskeleton, segmented bodies, and jointed legs—arthropods. Objects include pinned and live specimens, and fossils.
Invertebrates
Images presently feature fossils and molluscs, with their diverse and colourful shells.
Mammals
Mammals are warm-blooded animals that produce milk. Most mammals are partially or wholly covered with hair. Images presently feature fossils, skin and skeleton mounts.
Meteorites
Meteorites date from the formation of the solar system and carry clues about the distant past. The ROM has one of the premier collections of rare meteorites in the world, including a piece of Mars.
Minerals
Minerals tell the story of our planet, and the dynamic forces that shape and change it. The collection is pre-eminent in its holdings of Canadian minerals and includes rare minerals of extraordinary colour and shape.
Plants
Images feature fossils, herbarium specimens, field work, and include field images and some microscopic views.
Prehistoric Animals
Vertebrate animals now extinct, except for dinosaurs and including examples of birds and mammals. The collections features large fossil skeletons, some unusual specimens, and a large collection of North and South American Ice Age specimens, many of which hold particular relevance to Ontario and adjoining regions.
Reptiles & Amphibians
Images of amphibians and reptiles. There are several differences between the two, especially in reproduction, anatomy, and metabolism. Objects include skulls, mounted specimens, dinosaurs and other fossils, and field images.
Rocks
A rock is composed of one or more of the minerals forming the earth's crust.
